Coat Hanger Coat Rack Project

Just over a year ago I posted this article about repurposing an old ladder back chair as a bathroom shelf.

It's one of those great ideas that lead to the term upcycling. The art of reusing unwanted items by converting them into something better.

The 'coat hanger coat rack' is just so damn clever it hurts. Some people have a natural talent (or a huge amount of resources at their finger tips) to come up with these seemingly simple ideas.

The truth however, is that we all look at things differently. We all have our own opinions and views on the world and how it works.
One group, which would be most of us, would throw a shirt on the hanger, stick the hanger in the wardrobe and be done with it.
Another group, might take that design, re-engineer it and give it a new use. The goal, to prevent wasting potentially useful materials by making use of existing ones.

Both are right. Everything has a use but this second group gets my undying loyalty and respect. I never want to view one object and see it for only that.

Remember when, as kids, you looked up into the sky on a cloudy day and made shapes out of the clouds. When did we stop doing that and think, "Damn, looks like rain again"?

It's time to start looking around and instead of throwing something straight into the bin, think for a minute, figure out if it might have one more use left in it and if you can think of anything, before you throw it out, jump over to Recycle This and search their vast archives.

If you can't find anything there to help you, then okay, throw it away.

In the meantime, if you have a few old wooden hangers lying around and were just about to get rid of them, guess what?

Here's a short video, courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens showing you how to turn old hangers into a brand new coat rack for you hallway or perhaps out at the back door or maybe even out in the shed.
